I am a father, husband, grandfather, teacher, researcher, and author. I am currently Professor in the Department of Sociology & Anthropology at North Carolina State University and hold a Bachelor's degree in Psychology from Michigan State University and a Ph.D. in Sociology from Washington State University. Discussions and articles about my work have appeared in venues including USA Today, Newsweek, Washington Post, MS., Working Woman, MSNBC, NPR and many local print and broadcast outlets.
My research interests are broadly focused on work and family issues, including effects of maternal employment on child well-being, fairness in the division of housework, and various aspects of marital stability. My research has appeared in such professional journals as Social Forces, Journal of Marriage and the Family, Journal of Family Issues, Journal of Comparative Family Studies, Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, and Social Psychology Quarterly. I literally wrote the book on family research methods (Methods of Family Research, Sage, 2013); the third edition is coauthored with Shannon N. Davis of George Mason University.
