Being the father of three didn't give me a lot of time to develop fascinating hobbies.  I don't skydive, race motorcycles, climb mountains, restore antique cars, or speak seven languages.  In my spare time I enjoy reading, hiking, Wolfpack athletics -- especially basketball, where you can find me in Section 109 at every home game -- and the 2006 Stanley Cup champion Carolina Hurricanes!

I'm a big fan of blues music, with Stevie Ray Vaughn, Corky Siegel, Bonnie Raitt and Susan Tedeschi among my favorites.  I enjoy reading about history and science (non-fiction), mysteries (especially Elmore Leonard, Tony Hillerman and Carl Hiassen) and science fiction (Robert Heinlein, Isaac Asimov and Harry Turtledove).   Straight Man by Richard Russo is the best and funniest novel ever written about academic life, and peanut M&Ms are nature's perfect food.

All three of my children are Wolfpack alums.  My daughter Rachel graduated as university valedictorian from NC State majoring in (what else?) sociology.  She is the mother of my nearly-perfect grandson Emory and plans on completing a PhD in sociology.

My son Jonathan (J.J.) majored in Sport Management and is now a Senior Account Executive in the athletics department at the University of Miami.

My son Sam majored in Political Science.  He is planning on working for an MBA.

My wife of thirty-three years, Lori, recently retired as Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer for the North Carolina Biotechnology Center.
